WHAT EMDR CAN HELP WITH

Trauma is where EMDR began. Our team uses it for much more.

Big or small, recent or long ago.

Our Adelaide psychologists use EMDR for a range of everyday struggles. It always starts after your clinician has got to know you, understood how you'd like things to change and planned the right approach with you.

Past trauma, big or small

Single distressing events, or a build-up of smaller ones that still affect you today.

Anxiety and panic

Including panic attacks, phobias and anxiety with a clear root cause.

Grief and loss

Working through complicated or sudden loss at a pace that feels manageable.

Chronic stress or overwhelm

When stress has built up over months or years and feels hard to shift.

Intrusive memories

Flashbacks, nightmares or memories that resurface uninvited.

Low self-worth

Beliefs about yourself that trace back to earlier experiences.

Work or medical trauma

Difficult incidents at work, accidents or frightening medical experiences.

Performance blocks

Persistent fear or self-doubt getting in the way of exams, sport or public speaking.

HOW EMDR WORKS

When a memory still feels like yesterday.

Some experiences are stored before they've been processed.

During an overwhelming event, the brain can store a memory in an unprocessed way. The emotions attached to it stay unresolved, so it can resurface as flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, body sensations or a constant sense of being on edge. Many people describe it as remembering something as if it happened yesterday.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. While you briefly bring a memory to mind, your psychologist guides you through short sets of bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping or sound. The aim is to reduce the intensity of the memory and help it settle into the past, where it belongs.

You don't need to understand exactly how it works for it to be useful. Your clinician is doing a lot of the work behind the scenes.

The Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of ASD, PTSD and Complex PTSD include EMDR among the trauma-focused therapies recommended for adults with PTSD.

WHAT HAPPENS IN EMDR

Six stages, paced around you.

Some take a single appointment. Others unfold over a few weeks.

You stay in control the whole way through. Every session finishes with grounding, so you leave feeling settled, and your clinician checks in on how things feel before and after.

  1. 01

    Getting to know you

We start with your history and current concerns, so we understand the full picture before touching anything difficult.

  2. 02

    Building your resources

We introduce calming and grounding techniques you can use in session and in daily life, so you always feel in control.

  3. 03

    Choosing a target memory

Together we choose a specific memory to work on, along with the thoughts, feelings and body sensations attached to it.

  4. 04

    Reprocessing

Using guided eye movements, tapping or sound, your clinician helps your brain reprocess the memory while you notice what naturally comes up.

  5. 05

    Strengthening the positive

We reinforce a more helpful belief about yourself in place of the old one, for example moving from "I was powerless" to "I am safe now".

  6. 06

    Closing and checking in

Every session ends with grounding, and we review how things feel before and after.
